New High Temperature Filter System for
Hot Gas Filtration and Product Recover

Background

    A new generation of hot gas filter systems has been developed to overcome the age-old problems of gas cooling by dilution air or water sprays without damage to equipment from over - temperature, sparks and occasional fires in the system.

    To solve the problems of expensive baghouse fires in an aluminum re-melt operation, a new type of high temperature filters has been developed which have met with astounding success in many other difficult high temperature gas filtration applications ranging from aluminum processing all the way to nuclear fuel incineration.

    The original bag filter, designed with the appropriate safety control features and spark arrestors, controlled the emissions from an induction melting process. The bag filter however, lasted only three short months before repeatedly catching fire and causing serious damage and disruption of production. The filter unit was from a leading filter manufacturer and one of the best available on the market at the time, but nobody wanted to take responsibility to permanently resolve the recurring fire problems.

    Within only a few months of making the decision to attack the serious problem and design a foolproof system the first Special Edition CERAFUMETM Reverse Jet Filter was in operation.

    Now, CERAFUMETM hot gas filter systems are usually chosen over normal fabric filters because of their unique ability to function at temperatures far in excess of those obtainable with normal filter bags.

    Designed for compressed air pulse jet cleaning the CERAFUMETM hot gas filter systems are highly resistant to thermal shock, can operate at inlet gas temperatures of up to 1300ºF, with peaks in excess of 1800ºF, and can reduce particulate emission levels to below 1 mg/m3, even when filtering particles less than one micron in diameter.

Application

    Because of their versatility the CERAFUMETM filter systems can be utilized for a wide range of applications including the following:

  • Incineration of industrial and clinical waste
  • Production of bulk powders and pharmaceuticals
  • Brick and Cement Industries
  • Aluminum re-melt furnaces
  • Phosphor-Bronze/Brass
  • Gasification Plants
  • Investment casting
  • Nickel recovery
  • Magnesium
  • Iron melting
  • Lead oxide
  • Titanium
  • Copper
  • Boilers
  • Coal drying
  • Rotary kilns
  • Salt flux furnaces
  • Drying of weed killer
  • High temperature cement dust
  • Explosive waste burning

and various other systems.

    Through a continuing development program the CERAFUMETM filter systems are available in a range of sizes and configurations, all with distinct advantages over conventional bag filters. CERAFUMETM filters are also offered with off-line cleaning to solve more difficult applications.

Advantages and Benefits

    Off-line cleaning can greatly increase the efficiency of reverse jet cleaning resulting in lower filter pressure drop and reduction in compressed air usage.

    Other benefits are the ability to remove a difficult dust cake from filter elements and prevent objectionable downstream conditions to processes.

    Filter units are available in regular carbon steel or stainless steel construction, depending on application and customer’s requirements.

    The key advantages of the CERAFUMETM Filter systems are:

- High filtration efficiencies up to 99.99%, HEPA rated;

- Typical emission levels of below 1 mg/m3;

  • Operating temperatures of up to 1300º F, with peak temperatures of up to 1800º F;
  • No need for dilution air, water sprays, spark arrestors or complicated control systems, reducing power consumption and maintenance costs;
  • Resistant to attacks from acid and alkali components in the gas stream;

    Operation at higher temperatures allows injection into the gas stream and efficient use of absorbents such as pulverized lime or sodium bicarbonate, for dry scrubbing and removal of unwanted chemicals in the gas stream;

    The CERAFUMETM filter systems are available in modular designs in both filter housings and support structure ranging in gas flows from 100 ACFM up to 60,000 ACFM and higher, in single or multiple module arrangements.

Other options available include:

  • Screw conveyor and rotary valve product discharge;
  • Heat tracing to maintain filter housing above dew point;
  • Insulation for protection and prevention of heat loss
  • Silencer for exhaust fans;
  • Customized control panels for additional process control.

    Consider the advantages of CERAFUMETM high temperature gas filtration before you consider purchasing a conventional bag filter!
